Each year during winter over 1500 humpback whales migrate from Antarctic waters through South Island New Zealand to the warm waters of Hervey Bay. Humpback whales migrate up to 25,000 km a year, grow up to 16 metres in length and weigh up to 45,000 kilograms. They eat up to 1 to 8 tones of fish and krill a day during the winter and store this food in the form of fat to nourish them during the summer months. They are truly incredible animals.

Hervey Bay is the perfect location for humpback whales to stop and calve and they arrive from late July and remain until November before returning to the southern ocean. Visitors to the area have an ideal opportunity to have a close encounter with these amazing animals display spectacular acts of breaching, tail flapping and pectoral slapping.
